Humpback whales are one of the most majestic marine mammals found in Alaska. These large whales can grow up to 16 meters in length and weigh as much as 36,000 kilograms. Every summer, humpback whales migrate from their winter breeding grounds in Hawaii and Mexico to the rich feeding grounds of Alaska’s coastal waters. The nutrient-rich waters provide abundant food sources such as krill, herring, and other small fish for the humpback whales to feed on. Humpback whales are known for their acrobatic displays, including breaching, tail slapping, and flipper waving, making them a popular sight for whale watchers in Alaska. However, despite their impressive size and resilience, humpback whales face threats from human activities such as entanglement in fishing gear, ship strikes, and noise pollution. These whales are Baleen whales that filter their food, small fish, shrimp, and krill, out of the seawater.
The Humpback Whale medallion was designed in 1997 by Alaskan Artist Christy Matthews and is still one of our most beautiful designs. The medallions are packaged in an airtight container and handsome gift box. The reverse is our Land of the Midnight Sun design.
